Weightless, the body developing a royalty-free open standard to enable the Internet of Things, has released version 0.9 of its M2M specification. A final, stable v1.0 release is now due towards the end of the first quarter of 2013. It is expected to lead to M2M systems with a chipset cost of less than $2, a range of up to 10 kilometres and a battery life of 10 years.

“This is another very important milestone for the Weightless SIG”, commented Professor William Webb, CEO of Weightless. “Coming fast on the heels of the significant announcement of the formation of the board and support from key international companies, we are readying the standard for a high-profile launch early next year. Version 0.9 of the specification is available to download from the Weightless SIG website.”

Work will now concentrate on validation of the specification, including consistent use of terminology, glossary terms, etc., in preparation for submission to an accredited standards body.
