Smart city organisation records landmark year

The Wi-SUN Alliance has announced that it has achieved a number of “major milestones” over the course of the past year, including the launch of its field area networks (FAN) certification programme.

According to a statement, global membership - which includes service providers, vendors, utilities, municipalities and academia – has also grown by 50 over the past 12 months, taking the total to 227. Products which have come to market certified under the aforementioned scheme have been produced by entities including Cisco, Itron, Kyoto University, Landis+Gyr, Nissin Systems, Renesas and ROHM.

The Wi-SUN Alliance describes itself as a “global ecosystem of member companies seeking to accelerate the implementation of open standards-based FANs and the Internet of Things (IoT).”

Speaking of its progress over the last year, Phil Beecher, president and CEO of the organisation said: “We have been quietly going about our business for many years, but this past 12 months has seen much of the work we’ve done come to fruition. With higher IoT adoption rates - particularly with smart city and utilities increasingly rolling out different applications - Wi-SUN Alliance members are seeing growing demand for their products.”
