Singapore opens first physical 6G lab
Singapore’s state regulator has partnered with the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) to launch the first physical 6G lab in the region.
The Future Communications Connectivity (FCC) lab has been set-up as part of the country’s $70m Future Communications Research & Development Programme (FCP) and will be situated at SUTD’s campus. The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) said the lab would look to combine 6G R&D with SUTD’s artificial intelligence (AI) Mega Centre.
According to the Singaporean government, the FCCLab will “accelerate cutting-edge research of future communications technologies and unlock breakthroughs in 6G research”. It will also host research to demonstrate emerging technologies such as holographic communications and intelligent sensing capabilities that will support development of self-driving cars and drones.
The new lab will also be supported by Singapore’s National Research Foundation (NRF) covering research areas including multi-access edge computing, network orchestration, non-terrestrial networks and security.
IMDA’s chief executive, Lew Cheun Hong said, “The innovations of today are not possible without constant investment and keeping our eyes on the next bound. We are excited to partner SUTD to launch Southeast Asia’s first 6G Lab. This is the start of our efforts to tap into the promise of future communications tech and become a global node of excellence.”
