60 seconds with Syndico's Andy Wilson

Syndico's managing director, Andy Wilson, talks to us about his career in the two-way radio industry

How do you spend most of your time at work?

I never really have the same day twice! I have an incredible administration team, which frees me up to spend time with customers, suppliers and the team themselves. We are focused on growth and dealer acquisition at the moment, so it’s always very busy.

What’s the one gadget that you can’t live without?

My Android phone, and specifically the Evernote application on it that I use about 100 times per day.

Describe your most unforgettable project.

I used to do the radios for Victoria’s Secret [the retailer] – there were some unforgettable moments there. Getting coverage over five floors using PMR446 was a challenge.

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve seen while working in the radio sector?

The dance moves from a dealer principal on a night out. The dealer shall remain nameless, of course, but I can tell you it was at Flares in Sheffield…

What advice would you give to a young radio engineer who’s starting their first job in the industry?

Focus on systems design and application development. Radio is an IT product these days, and you need to be an expert.

How has your role changed since you started working within the radio industry?

It hasn’t changed at all. My job has always been to work hard for my reseller partners, and produce results for the manufacturers I represent.

What do you do in your free time to relax?

A lot of my time away from day to day work is taken up thinking about the business and where we can take it next. I also have a five-year-old daughter and identical twin daughters aged three who ensure I don’t ever get bored.

Andy Wilson is the co-founder and managing director of Syndico Distribution, which was established in April 2015. Having left university and set up his first business at the age of 22, Wilson ‘fell in’ to the PMR sector and has been in or around it for 15 years.
