Nimans' Gary Redshaw discusses his time in the two-way radio industry

How do you spend most of your time at work?

I manage stock levels, give advice and drive awareness of radio communications to staff and customers.

What’s the one gadget – other than two way radio – that you can’t live without?

My iPad, although I’m not a big fan of using gadgets.

Describe your most unforgettable project during your time working in the industry.

A local leisure centre where we introduced two-way radios. They helped to save the life of someone who had a heart attack, and help was immediately called.

What’s the most unusual thing you’ve seen while in the wireless comms sector?

We had some new radios delivered and our founder Julian asked to have a look. When I went back to collect them, all that was left was a chassis and a spring where the antenna was, as he’d stripped them down to assess them.

What advice would you give to a young radio engineer who’s starting their first job in the industry?

Be patient, learn and listen, especially from people with lots of experience. Always be prepared to take their advice to boost your own knowledge.

How has your role changed since you started working within the industry?

My role continues to evolve. Rather than being sat behind a desk and monitoring stock and fielding enquiries, I now manage the whole division. The company is a lot different compared to when I joined. Now we have 400 staff, whereas back in the old days was only around 75. We were based in a much smaller premises back then as well.

What do you do in your spare to kick back and relax, when you’re not at work?

I’m a big Rugby League fan, especially Salford Red Devils. I go home and away and it’s a big part of my life. Watching football is a close second.
