Focal Point Positioning was one of three developers of ‘disruptive’ wireless products to be named winners at Cambridge Wireless’ 7th Discovering Start-ups event taking place in the City of London yesterday.

The company won following a pitch to event judges outlining its work to dramatically improve the accuracy of GPS through the use of smartphone-based sensor fusion, machine learning and signal processing technology.

Other winners included 8Power, which has developed wireless monitoring and sensing products to harvest battery power from vibrations, and AlgoDynamix whose software detects anomalies in financial markets to predict future events.

Speaking exclusively to Land Mobile, MediaTek developer relations manager, and member of the judging panel, Ed Kay said: “I was impressed how the winners had taken a real world challenge and approached the solution from a practical, scalable and achievable direction. All the winners had applied their own experience and passion to solving problems with the strong prospect of developing highly successful businesses.”

He continued: “All the participants' presentations, but the winners in particular, were thoughtful and focused on the issues being addressed. This allowed the judges to instantly recognise both the problem and how important the proposed solution was."

CEO of Cambridge Wireless Bob Driver said: “The competition always creates a buzz and is a great showcase for the very best in tech innovation from the UK and beyond. The passion and quality of the pitches showed that invention and entrepreneurship are stronger than ever.”

The 28-strong judging panel was made up of experts from businesses including Barclays, BT, Google and Samsung. The event was sponsored and hosted by Deloitte in London.
