Microsoft has deployed Hexagon technology designed to improve first responder safety and efficiency, into a smart city patrol car. The car is being demonstrated at the Smart City Expo World Congress, which is taking place this week in Barcelona.

According to Hexagon, the Intergraph Mobile Responder solution provides mobile dispatching workflows via a native app for Microsoft Windows devices. It is installed on a rugged laptop situated in the vehicle itself, which Hexagon refers to as “a platform for cloud-connected digital patrol solutions that improve incident response.” Hexagon’s cloud solution of choice is Microsoft Azure.

Speaking of the deployment, Hexagon’s chief technology officer Kalyn Sims said: “Safe cities are all about connectivity and collaboration. The Microsoft patrol car is a significant leap forward for law enforcement operations.

“With safe city-ready components that easily plug into new or existing information technologies and solutions, Hexagon can help customers advance their capabilities and deliver on safe city goals.”

Managing director of Microsoft CityNext, Trudy Norris-Grey said: “As technology and urbanisation continue to change the way governments interact with citizens, Microsoft CityNext is leveraging the trusted Azure platform to help cities remain connected.

“From better transit management and safer roads to reduced crime and increased energy efficiency, cloud technology is helping cities to empower their citizens, and create the connected society of the future.”
