Telecoms companies create ‘EU Cloud Alliance’
Nokia, Ericsson and Telefonica have joined 23 other telecoms companies in creating what they call a “roadmap for cloud and edge technology solutions across Europe” by forming the EU Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud.
The European Commission said that it received the roadmap from the companies “outlining technological priorities for investment needed to strengthen Europe's leadership in cloud and edge technologies.”
Speaking of the initiative, Nokia CEO, Pekka Lundmark, said: “Europe has a proud history of communications tech leadership. I want that to continue - this EU Cloud Alliance is big news for a truly digital EU.
“Edge computing will be transformational for growth, innovation and sustainability. Nokia is proud to support the European Cloud & Edge Technology Roadmap.”
According to the roadmap, priority areas for EU joint investments efforts should centre on “becoming the leader in domains that will shape European cloud and edge offerings on the global market, focusing on climate-neutrality, cybersecurity, trustworthy data exchange and interoperability by expanding infrastructure foundations across Europe”.
The European Commission recently updated its Industrial Strategy, and announced the launch of the Alliance for Industrial Data, Edge and Cloud. As part of the updated strategy, the commission set targets for the deployment of 10,000 climate neutral, highly secure, edge nodes, as well as an adoption rate of 75 per cent of advanced cloud services for European businesses by 2030.
