Telecoms giant Vodafone and Google Cloud have announced that they are building an “industry-first” global data platform, capable of processing 50TB of data every day.

The creation of the ‘Nucleus’ cloud-based storage and analytics portal is the first part of a newly expanded six-year strategic partnership between the two entities. Vodafone has claimed that the new integrated data platform will help the company “better capitalise on its data”.

According to a statement, all of Vodafone’s SAP environment and big data/business intelligence data will move to Google Cloud as part of the deal.

Johan Wibergh, Vodafone Group chief technology officer, said: “We have vast amounts of data which, when securely processed and made available across our footprint, using the collective power of Vodafone and Google Cloud’s engineering expertise, will transform our services.”

Vodafone claims that it has “700 potential use cases” for its new aggregated database including automated service upgrades, digital twins and collaboration on health issues using automated machine learning tools.

“Telecommunications firms are increasingly differentiating their customer experiences through the use of data and analytics, and this has never been more important than during the current pandemic,” added Thomas Kurian, Google Cloud CEO.

“We are thrilled to be selected as Vodafone’s global strategic cloud partner for analytics and SAP, and to co-innovate on new products that will accelerate the industry’s digital transformation.”

The Nucleus database is currently being developed by 1,000 employees of Vodafone and Google based in the UK, Spain and the US.
