How do you spend your time at work?
Writing features and news stories, interviewing contacts and attending events. I also edit the BAPCO Journal, a quarterly focusing on public safety comms. It’s a challenging but incredibly fulfilling – and often quite exciting – role, where I’m always learning something new.
What’s your next big challenge?
I’m moving to become the editor at MA Exhibitions, with particular responsibility for
the BAPCO Show and Critical Communications World.
This will primarily involve curating printed and online publications to help promote the events as well as informing visitors of new developments, reflecting the thought leadership which both are renowned for.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in the digital communications industry?
Absolutely no idea. In terms of how to communicate with members of the press, however, always remember that what you think is interesting and what they think is interesting are likely to be two very different things.
What’s the most unusual project you’ve ever been involved with?
At the beginning of my career I wrote about films, and as such had the opportunity to interview several really quite famous people. Getting paid to chat wrestling with The Rock is pretty out of the ordinary, by any measure.
My fondest memories of my time as deputy editor on Land Mobile and Critical Communications Today are all situated around industry events. The aforementioned BAPCO Show and CCW are both very special.
What do you do in your spare time to relax?
I’m a massive American Football geek, and a fan of the Denver Broncos in particular. As a lad from Sussex who’s never ventured further in the US than New York City, this makes as little sense to me as it’s likely to anyone else. I also play music – the drums and, with less success, the guitar.
