Google drives ahead with Honda collaboration

All new Honda car models will feature in-built Google in-vehicle services as part of an enhanced collaboration between the duo focused on 5G voice assistance and navigation.

The Japanese car manufacturer said it is planning to begin featuring enhanced in-built Google services within all new models that will go on sale in the second half of 2022 in North America before expanding it globally in stages.

Enhanced functions will include voice assistant allowing drivers to send messages, get directions and control media and vehicle functions. Compatible smartphone devices will be able to be operated hands-free with Google Maps also integrated into the dashboard functionality.

Honda began adopting Google’s Android Auto functionality in its cars in 2016, starting with the Honda Accord. Android Auto allows many smartphone functions to be displayed on a vehicle screen and operated using vehicle controls.

As part of the new collaboration with Google, Honda has claimed it will “further advance the user experience for its customers”. The company outlined this will focus on voice assistant, navigation and in-vehicle apps with more specific details on the technology involved to follow.
