Hotspot 2.0 Wi-Fi launches in Trafalgar Square

Ontix and Global Reach Technology have unveiled a new public Wi-Fi service in London’s Trafalgar Square.

The outdoor service runs alongside Ontix's existing small cell wireless network and will initially comprise 17 Ruckus Wi-Fi access points on lampposts to deliver high-speed backhaul.

Global Reach Technology says this is the first central London service to include its Passpoint Hotspot 2.0 connectivity, which has been used to provide similar services in New York City, San Francisco, and San Jose.

The Hotspot 2.0 networking standard allows mobile network operators to auto-attach their overseas subscribers to the Ontix network using the mobile operator’s profile. Additionally, a Wi-Fi roaming service is provided by Global Reach to enable international and UK cellular operators to connect to this network.

Chris Bruce, managing director of Global Reach said, “In busy areas like central London, that are popular with tourists, commuters and residents, high quality, secure connectivity is delivered when robust Wi-Fi and cellular mobile networks work together. To satisfy demand from commuters, shoppers and international visitors, hybrid networks like Ontix working with Global Reach deliver the coverage and capacity needed in dense urban areas.”
